BRTS can be a good option, say some passengers
In the absence of public transportation, frequent flyers at the domestic airport face sizable problems including shelling out exorbitant amount of money on pre-paid taxis and autos.
A lone pole serves as a bus stand for bus number 102 at the airport exit which is not visible from the airport. Flyers suggest the Hyderabad model where AC buses at the airport ply at reasonable rates. Such a model can be incorporated by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC).
As an alternative, the BRTS bus service can be a part of the airport infrastructure for the passengers’ convenience. Milap Mehta, general manager at an education agency said: “I am a frequent flyer and each time I face the problem of public transport. Taxis and autos charg

e sky-high rates. In Hyderabad, many AC buses available at airport charge between Rs70 and 80 to travel to different parts of the city. It is the best example to follow.” He adds there can be no dearth of buses, since Ahmedabad has huge traffic, and can be five different buses for different zones.
Another frequent flyer, Jatin Trivedi, regional manager of Apollo Tyres said: “Auto-rickshaws have no fixed charges. There must be an effective public transport system. We leave a very bad impression on the outsiders and foreigners. One has to walk 1.5 km to reach the AMTS bus stand.”
Former chairman of Indian Institute of Chartered Accountant, Jainik Vakil said: “If there are good facilities available, people will not opt for cabs and autos.” Divyang Brahmbhatt, an eye surgeon said: “The pre-paid taxis charge four times the rates in Delhi. I prefer travelling by local transport at Delhi airport. Public transport is also better for safety, economy and security purpose.”
CK Tiwari, project scientist at Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA) suggested the BRTS as the best option. In Delhi, there is a metro rail plying between Delhi Expressway and the airport.
Kismat Kumar, manager at Torrent Pharmaceuticals, admits that the problem is more taxing at night as it is difficult to find transportation.
Arjav Shah, the Deputy Municipal Commissioner said: “We are inquiring into the matter. We will certainly discuss introducing AC buses at airport with the municipal commissioner.”
Sources from the AMC revealed that the bus stand is primarily used by labourers to get to the city and generates a mere Rs2000 per day. However, efforts will be made by the civic body to revamp it.
