Over the last five years, thermal power plants–are among India's chief polluters–pushed nationwide levels of sulphur dioxide (SO2), a toxic gas, by 32% and fine particles called PM 2.5 by 34%. Despite this, two major thermal power plants across the state; Kota Super Thermal Power Station and Suratgarh Super Thermal power station, missed their deadline of December 7, set by the Environment Ministry to upgrade for cleaner air technologies. The notification, issued in December 2015, aimed at bringing down sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxide (NOx), PM10 and mercury emissions by about 75-80 percent.
