Wives of two liver patients swap organs to save their lives

Selling his new 2BHK house in Kolhapur, a 36-year-old farmer recently managed to pay the bill of a liver transplant which he underwent on August 6. While the patient, Santosh Bhendiger’s wife Rupa (23) was ready to donate a liver to him, due to mismatch of blood group and liver, he had to wait for another live liver donor.
Suffering from liver and kidney infection for more than four years, Santosh managed to get a liver donor through ‘liver swap’ process where another patient too was waiting for a liver match but was not able to get match from his family.
While kidney swaps are common, they are rare in liver transplantation. In Mumbai, this will be the third liver swap.
