Ashok Stambh? Congress looks beyond 2013
In a pre-poll exercise, chief minister Ashok Gehlot rolled out a populist budget with happy overtones and good-looking numbers. The political undertone could not be missed in his budget speech, which saw fulfilment of longstanding promises made in the Congress manifesto – like reduction in taxes on petrol prices and dedicated allocation for welfare of minorities and scheduled tribes among other things.
Employment has been opened up in a big way with Gehlot deciding to fill up over two lakh vacancies across government departments. By dedicating one-third of the plan outlay for women-centric projects, he has attempted to woo the fairer sex and keep them in his voters’ list.
