Govt to offer perks to develop private land for cheap homes

Mumbai: In a first of its kind, Maharashtra government will promote affordable housing projects for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) and Lower Income Group (LIG) on private lands across the state.
An official from the state housing department said the government is exploring this option to make up the total housing shortfall in Maharashtra, which is to the tune of 19.4 lakh. Under the new plan, 18 lakh houses will be in EWS and LIG categories.
The lands will be selected through a bidding process, conducted by the state-run Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) and on certain criteria.
