European Parliament urges centre to curb the practice

The European Parliament has urged government of India to enact a law to curb the practice of manual scavenging that is still prevalent in many states including Madhya Pradesh.
In a resolution adopted on December 13, the Parliament expressed deep concern over this practice and urged the centre to amend and enforce the law banning this practice.
The practice had come to the notice of the Parliament after a "National People's March for Eradication of Manual Scavenging" (Maila Mukti Yatra - 2012-13) was flagged off from Bhopal on November 30.
The march, after covering 200 districts in 18 states, will culminate in New Delhi on December 31.
