Generally, you mustn’t judge a book by its cover, but sometimes, it’s not such a bad idea. While the title On the Dessert Trail and sub-title boasting ‘Over 80 recipes from across the world!’ may be enough to tempt you to leaf through Monish Gujral’s new book, despite having Penguin as its publisher, the jacket is far from striking. Likewise, its 298 pages consistently induce curiosity and excitement, but also let you down for want of attention to detail.
From unheard of desserts like khoz mbesses from Algeria and pantxineta from Spain, to more familiar ones like Austrian sachertorte and Britain’s banofee pie, popular world sensations like the American red velvet cake and Italian tiramisu and home-grown sweets like ras
