Grounded by a congenital condition, Nigerian youth walks for the first time in 28 years
For the past one month, Odean Charles from Nigeria has been camping the city for trying to rid himself of cerebral palsy, a debilitating birth condition that has prevented him from walking without support for 28 years now.
Thanks to a team of orthopaedic surgeons at Fortis Hospital in Mulund who operated on Charles, he hopes to walk his way back to health. Consultant orthopedic surgeon Sachin Bhonsle said, "A simple soft tissue operation could have cured him in childhood itself, but the now old and severe deformity needed not only soft tissues but also correction of the bends at his bone joints."
According to doctors, when Charles first came to the hospital his stiff knees were bent at 45 degrees. "We first releas

ed soft tissues of his knees to attempt straightening. As his knees would hardly budge. We then proceeded to gently realign his bones using special osteotomes (bone-cutting equipment). Full correction was achieved and the fixation was done using titanium plates and screws. His hips were tightly scissored where a soft tissue release was done," added Dr Bhonsle.
With no history of any other ailment, Charles had bilateral flexion contractures of hips, knees as well as hamstring tightness. An IT professional, he has passion for games like football but his birth defect does not allow him to run like normal people. So, he turned computer savvy instead of athletic.
"I play video games to give me a feel of being on the football field. After being restricted for 28 years, for the first time today post-surgery I could walk straight," said Charles, who only depended on physiotherapy prior to the operation as aid.
"I had to exercise daily and as I grew up my leg muscles became stronger, but even they start paining if I stretch them. It became so painful that I had to stop exercising," added Odeon, who is recovering at the hospital before readying to fly out of the city with a new lease of life.
