Holder Alexandrov among four who share lead with seven points after the end of the eighth round; seven others follow closely half-a-point behind
The Mayor's Cup chess is interestingly poised after eight rounds. With three rounds remaining, it is still hard to predict a winner as four players share the lead with seven points and seven others trail them by half-a-point.
Defending champion Aleksej Alexandrov of Belarus, playing with whites, had a tough encounter with Russian Grandmaster Andrei Devaitkin at the top of the table. The draw between the leaders on the top board makes them joint leaders with seven points each.
The Slav Defence game on the top board lasted 50 moves after which the p layers signed the truce. They were left with a rook and one pawn each on the board.
Meanwhile, Indian GM Adhiban B recovered well after his shock loss on Monday to defeat

Hungarian GM Gara Ticia. Adhiban played an aggressive game and did not give the Hungarian any chance to capitalise. He now has 6.5 points.
On the second board, Nikolai Chadaev of Russia was also stretched all the way by local lad Saumil Padhya but the latter was outplayed towards the end.
Padhye played enterprisingly with the white pieces against Chadaev and did not miss any opportunity to exchange pieces.
In the end, however, the Russian showed better technique to first win a pawn and then the game after 76 moves.
In another important result John Paul Gomez of Philippines defeated a slightly higher rated Kirill Stupak of Belarus. Gomez and Chadaev, along with Alexandrov and Devaitkin, are now tied with seven points.
It will be interesting to see how the tournament shapes up in the next three days, with the concluding day on Friday determining a clear winner.
