During the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, we were not allowed to move without security because of the upheaval in Khalistan. A helicopter would follow the team bus for practice. We would head straight to our rooms after the games; we hardly had a chance to explore the city. We had three Sardars who were victim of abuses. Spectators would hurl barbs at them during matches.
Indians and those who backed Khalistan would sit in different groups. Fights ensued regularly; such was the turbulent wave during the time. We weren't even allowed to step out for shopping. We roamed the streets, went to the malls, and enjoyed ourselves to the fullest. for our own good.
There was this zebra-crossing ahead, but we decided not to use it. We thought we'd get away unnoticed. However, a policeman arrived from nowhere and took us in remand for breaking the rules.
He was so livid that we feared he'd inform the team management. After a long chat, we convinced him to go soft on us. Eventually his anger subsided, for he took our autographs before warning us against overstepping our bounds. We were finally released, but phew, weren't we relieved!
