Mumbai: Sachin Tendulkar hailed the brand of cricket India played to conquer Australia for the first time in Tests Down Under as “magnificent”. Speaking at a promotional event here on Wednesday, Tendulkar, who has toured Australia for five Test series in his glorious two-and-a-half decade career, said: “Fantastic. They have done really well. The brand of cricket the team has been able to produce Down Under has been magnificent.” The 45-year-old Tendulkar said that the triumph will inspire the younger generation to bring laurels for the country. “Talking about inspiring the younger generation, for sure you need heroes in life at various stages, whatever be your age. Without realising, you end up being heroes for the younger generation. Resu

lts like these are very important. When I was 10, I did not know much about cricket but knew that India won the World Cup and that’s when my journey started. The win in Australia will inspire many to go and achieve their best and bring laurels for the country,” Tendulkar added. He praised the bowlers – pacers and spinners alike – for making the victory possible and that the team is not competitive to go and excel anywhere in the world. “All the things don’t happen overnight. There is more awareness about diet, their training methods, better fitness, accessibility to any information they want, the infrastructure. All these contribute a lot. Plus, the guys are really talented. “Bumrah, Shami, Ishant, Ashwin, Jadeja, Kuldeep, Umesh have all chipped in at various points. Also, you want your fast bowlers to bowl hostile spells in patches. That has happened more frequently, not just with the new ball but also with the old. To be consistently clocking 140kmph is pleasing to the eye. We have a competitive attack that can perform in any part of the world on any surface,” Tendulkar said. The only person on the planet to have appeared in 200 Tests and scored 100 international centuries, Tendulkar had some suggestions to get domestic cricket more challenging. “If we could keep more challenging wickets for the batters, it could help the standard of playing. If you play on difficult wickets, your standard of playing goes up. That doesn’t mean the bowlers should come and roll their arms over. If the bowlers are able to control their swing or spin, it will become challenging,” Tendulkar said. As an appeal to all the sporting fraternity, particularly the federations, Tendulkar said the sporting infrastructure needs to get better and better. “Cricket is doing well. If the infrastructure (in all other sports) can continue to get better and better, we can dominate in any sport. “In cricket, there are a number of guys coming from areas nobody has heard of and done well and surprised everyone. Dipa Karmakar (gymnastics) has been doing well. Let’s have more such pleasant surprises. The support system is good but can surely get better,” said Tendulkar.
