In the absence of strike bowler Jasprit Bumrah for the limited-overs leg of the West Indies tour, Bhuvneshwar Kumar knew he had to step up in terms of taking wickets in the middle overs.
Time and again, as we saw during the recently-concluded World Cup, India captain Virat Kohli would summon Bumrah for a short spell between overs 30 and 40, and Bumrah would invariably give his skipper a wicket or two which would be worth its weight in gold.
In the second ODI against the West Indies on Sunday, the hosts seemed well on their way to overhauling India’s total of 279/7. With the target revised to 270 in 46 overs after a brief spell of showers, the Windies required 215 off 199 balls with eight wickets in hand.
