Centre plans to clean air, focus is on 102 cities

New Delhi: The government rolled out the long-awaited and delayed National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) on Thursday with a target of 20-30% reduction in air pollution by 2024 across 102 cities where air quality has continuously exceeded national standards. The plan will consider 2017 as the base year for measuring the reduction in levels of PM2.5 and PM10 pollutants.
The national plan, whose draft was released earlier this summer, comprises among other targets augmenting the network of air quality monitoring in urban and rural areas, commissioning of pollution source apportionment studies, research, training of ground staff, enforcement of new emission norms for thermal power plans and city-specific action plans for 102 cities.
