Court allows beach burial

DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi’s burial followed an overnight courtroom drama between his party and Tamil Nadu’s ruling AIADMK over where he should be laid to rest. The Madras High Court had to hear the government’s objections and DMK’s counters, at acting Chief Justice Huluvadi G Ramesh’s residence late on Tuesday night. On Wednesday morning, it resumed the hearing and allowed Karunanidhi’s burial at Chennai’s Marina Beach, as demanded by DMK.
Karunanidhi’s son and political heir MK Stalin broke down on hearing the verdict. He stood near his father’s body wrapped in the national flag and kept in a glass casket at Chennai’s Rajaji Hall and sobbed uncontrollably. He was consoled by his sister M Kanimozhi and other party leaders.
