India bats for fast-tracking Maldives’s reentry into Commonwealth

New Delhi: India’s External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar has called for the fast-tracking of Maldives’s readmission process to the Commonwealth at the group’s foreign ministers meet in London.
The former Maldivian government under Abdulla Yameen had withdrawn from the Commonwealth in 2016.
Current President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s government in Male had applied for membership again and took approval from the cabinet a month after taking charge. He was took charge in November 2018.
In fact, applying for membership of the Commonwealth was one of the main priorities of the Solih govt in its 100-day agenda.
