State weeding out ‘ghost’ farmers

Mumbai: Information compiled by the State co-operation department has revealed that the government’s decision to go for online registration of farmers to decide eligibility for loan waiver has helped bust a fake registration racket and other malpractices.
The department has exposed an unholy nexus of bank employees, middlemen and local politicians working hand-in-glove to open ghost accounts and arrange No Objection Certificates (NOC) from banks, paving the way for loan disbursement. The department has also come across a large number of cases wherein pensioners continue to get loans due to proximity to bank employees.
A senior official says a preliminary estimate shows the government will save at least Rs 5,000 crore follow
