Noted writer awarded for his contribution to Gujarati literature

Ahmedabad: At 79, Padma Shri awardee Gunvant Shah, a noted thinker, writer, columnist, and also known for his immense contribution to the field of Gujarati literature, has added another feather to his cap. Shah was bestowed with the first ‘Sahitya Ratna’ award by Gujarat Sahitya Akademi. This award has been institutionalised by the Akademi for the first time in the state.
dna caught up with Shah for a brief telephonic interaction. “I’ll quote Rekha here from when she was receiving the Filmfare awards. She had said every creative person needs some and has some insecurity on how people are going to relate to our work. Such awards mean that people do appreciate our work, which of course is a good motivator.”
“From now on, a search committee, appointed by the executive committee, will shortlist people for the award. Till date, we used to give the Gujarat Gaurav Puraskar to distinguished litterateurs, but for some reason Gunvantbhai missed out on this. We wanted to rectify this. We then sent a proposal to the state recommending them to declare a new award for people like him,” said Bhagyesh Jha, chairman of Gujarat Sahitya Akademi.
