Abhinay Banker is all set to win over audiences with Madhu Rai’s ‘Koi pan ek phoon nu naam bolo toh’

Nearly five decades ago, eminent Gujarati author and playwright Madhu Rai penned down psychological thriller ‘Koi pan ek phool nu naam bolo toh’ (Name any one flower). Later in 1969, Kailash Pandya- who was also the first head of the drama department of Darpana directed the play and it was performed for the first time at Darpana academy.
45 years later, Abhinay Banker and his team are all geared up to perform this play on the same stage. Banker won accolades for his play Chalta firta Bambai, inspired by three short stories of Urdu writer Sadat Hasan Manto. “I always try to bring out the contemporary context when I direct a play which has been written years back; but, this is probably the first time that I haven’t made any changes in the play. The screen play is so beautifully written that it has a power to appeal to audiences at all strata” said Banker.
Unlike a typical thriller, the play is well-balanced with humour quotient. The music has been composed by Mehul Surti who also composed for urban Gujarati film ‘Kevi Rite Jaish’.
Kailash Pandya and Madhu Rai had also acted in the play when it was staged first in 1969. The play is scheduled to be staged at Darpana Academy on October 10 as part of Natarani Theatre Festival.
getting into the character
I was sure from the very beginning that the role of Kamini & Kanta would be played by Happy. Though I knew that she hasn’t done such roles earlier and it would be difficult to mould her, knowing her versatility,
I also knew she would do complete justice to the character.” -Abhinay Banker, director, plays Keshav Thakar & Deshpandey
“It’s a matter of great pride to portray the character which was once portrayed by my guru Kailash Pandya, I had heard a lot about the play from him  I’ll assure that I do full justice to the character” Gaurang Anand, playing the role of Pramod & Pathak
I was deeply touched when Damini Mehta who had played Kamini and Kanta when it was first staged at Darpana, came to our rehearsals. She wept as it took her back to that era. Her words of appreciation to the team meant a victory for us. -Happy Bhavsar: actor, playing the role of Kamini & Kanta
There were times when just to annoy Abhinay all of us used to exchange our lines. Abhinay is one of the most talented directors I have worked with. He just narrated the characters of the script and told us to go ahead and do whatever we could to bring out the soul of the play. -Hemang Dave, actor playing Nandlal & Pritam
The journey through the play has been extremely challenging. Though I have always known Abhinay as a friend, this is for the first time that we are sharing a director-actor relationship. I’ll cherish the bond that each of us has with the rest of the team.” Ankit Gor, actor, playing the role of Sundar Desai
