Dutta from SAC talked about payloads and imaging instrument

Moumita Dutta, Project Manager for payloads for Mars Orbiter Mission at Space Application Centre (SAC) –ISRO, delivered a lecture on challenges to Mangalyaan and imaging instrument installed. She also explained in detail about payloads developed in SAC.
While starting to speak about this exciting subject, Dutta shared her observation of delivering lectures on the same subject, "This is my first lecture on this subject and every time I see students with more and more excitement."
As she was deeply involved in developing methane sensor fitted on Mangalyaan, she talked in detail about how it works and what is the methane status in Mars Orbit. The audience, a mix of professors, school students and engineering students seem more excited to know about how the Mangalyaan was launched which Dutta showed in a detailed animation.
The animation and her presentation mainly showed the way Mangalyaan was navigated into Mars Orbit on September 24, 2014 about eight months back. "The mission was planned for six months, but Mangalyaan is left with some more fuel even after six months. This can easily last for a few more months," she informed with great joy. Mangalyaan is the maiden Mars Orbiter Mission by India and yet it survived longer than the planned duration.
Interestingly, "The entire mission has 20% of women scientists deeply involved at every stage of development of the spacecraft," she explained with pride. She headed the project of making payloads for the satellite, which are Mars Colour Camera, Methane Sensor and Thermal Infrared Spectrometer developed in Ahmedabad. Along with details of the payloads and designs, she explained challenges involved in launching the Mangalyaan.
The main challenge was to make everything as light in weight as possible as five payloads on Mangalyaan weigh about 15kg in total. Along with that the other challenge was to design the spacecraft to sustain in harsh conditions in space. These include dealing with force, heat and cold. When the Mangalyaan was to enter orbit, the biggest worry was to start the main engine to give thrust to the satellite so that it aligns to the orbit. This worked well as it was started about one year after it was launched.
