From NIFT, Dipna comes a long way

‘Gujjubhai’ actress teaches art and craft skills to underprivileged women

Gujarati actress Dipna Patel who recently returned from US after performing her Gujarati play ‘Thappo’ also possess art and craft skills.
A NIFT alumnus, ‘Gujjubhai- The Great’ actress Dipna is now teaching underprivileged women after being associated with an NGO Jivhala Mahila Vikas Pratishthan, Pune. “I teach them art, craft and design on clothes and paper. This initiative is to make them financially independent. An exhibition of products made by these women will also be organised by the NGO once this session ends.” Not only this, Dipna recently also mentored participants during a Design and Technical Development workshop help in Kutch.
The journey
“To work with such NGOs, NID and NIFT students apply to Ministry of Textiles and it is the ministry which selects the students according to merit. I had also applied and was selected to be a part of Jivhala Mahila Vikas Pratishthan,” Dipna said.
The experience
“Being a fashion designer, I have worked with several NGOs be it in Mumbai, Ahmedabad or Pune. I am eager to utilise my skills as a fashion designer and so I took up this work even before I did ‘Gujjubhai’. And I don’t want to stop now after doing a movie!,” she added.
Empowering women
Talking further the actress said, “Seeing women acquiring new skills and getting empowered is the best feeling ever. I feel honoured to be a contributor for the cause.”
