Gandhinagar: Leader of opposition in the state assembly Shankersinh Vaghela, who is contesting from Sabarkantha Lok Sabha seat, has asked the Election Commission to reject the nomination of former gangster Abdul Latif’s son.
Latif’s son Shaikh Arif Abdul Latif has filed his nomination as a Samajwadi Party candidate from Sabarkantha seat. Vaghela said in a complaint to the EC that Shaikh Arif is registered as a voter in Nikol assembly constituency in Ahmedabad as well as in Sujalpur assembly constituency in MP.
“He was having two voter identity cards, which he did not disclose in his affidavit. Therefore his nomination should be rejected,” Vaghela said.
Abdul Latif was a dreaded name in Ahmedabad in the 1980s and 90s and was killed in a police encounter in 1995 when Vaghela was the chief minister. Latif’s other son Shaikh Kalim Abdul Latif had contested against Vaghela from Panchmahals seat in 2009 polls. He had secured over 23,600 votes and was largely instrumental in Vaghela’s defeat by just over 2,000 votes.
