A complete package of art and theatre, Kadak Badshahi was earlier staged in the city in 2010

Kadak  Badshahi, a presentation on the evolution of Ahmedabad, is back in the city after four years. Directed by Darpana’s Yadavan Chandran, Mallika Sarabhai and Nisarg Trivedi, it first premiered in 2010. Kadak Badshahi is a complete package of plays, paintings and much more, and talks about Ahmedabad’s history.
It was the seamlessly flowing Sabarmati river which became the major source of inspiration for city’s veteran painter Amit Ambalal whose painting has been used in one of the episodes of Kadak Badshahi. “Sabarmati has played a pivotal role in Ahmedabad’s history. Often, while sitting on its banks, I used to wonder what it must have been like in the glorious era when King Ahmed Shah ruled the city,” Ambalal said.
In a candid chat with dna after hrs, Ambalal spoke  about his association with Darpana. “I have been associated with the Darpana family, much before Natarani came into existence. I will always cherish the bond that I share with Mrinalini Sarabhai and Mallika Sarabhai,” he said.
Veteran director Rajoo Barot, who is also portraying the character of Ahmed Shah’s guru in Kadak Badshahi spoke about the new scene which has been incorporated in Kadak Badshahi. “The nav-nirman movement of Ahmedabad has been added in the play. It’s an absolute pleasure to present history once again on stage,” he said.
Barot also spoke about his bond with Darpana that is decades old. He recalled the days when Kailash Pandya, the first HOD of drama department, Darpana, used to invite Barot to plays. He said, “I have tried contributing whatever little I can to Darpana”.
Madhav Ramanuj, poet cum lyricist, will narrate excerpts from his biographical novel ‘Pinjar ni aar paar’, based on the life of Rueben David, who founded Kankaria zoo. “I penned the lyrics of the first Gujarati film which was produced by Mallika Sarabhai called Ajwadi raat amas ni,” Ramanuj said.
For theatre artiste Abhinay Banker who is portraying the character of Ahmed Shah, it is a matter of sheer pride to be a part of Kadak Badshahi. He said, “We have seen ten-day long presentations abroad , but in the local context, the trend is yet to arrive here and I am glad to contribute to Kadak Badshahi,” Banker said.
The 11-day run of Kadak Badshahi started on Thursday.
