Favourite kho-kho coach bows out

Former national kho-kho player and eminent coach Padma Shri Gopal Purushottam Phadke passed away at his residence at 1.15 am on Tuesday. He was 79 and is survived by two sons.
Phadke was suffering from cirrhosis of liver. The last rites were performed at Vaikunth crematorium.
Phadke was awarded the Dronacharya award in 2000 and Padma Shri in 2007.
After completing his diploma in engineering, he worked with the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation’s (MSRTC) depot at Dapodi. Later, he left the job and started a workshop to popularise kho-kho.
Phadke also concentrated on other games like kabaddi, mallakhamb, swimming, wrestling, badminton, hockey, tennis and football. He was also associated with the Arya Krida Dharak Mandal, which helped develop kho-kho.
Phadke was a member of the advisory committee of the All India Radio, Doordarshan, and the Dronacharya award selection committee.
