Restaurants on Sylt: Tips for food from good to cheap

Are you planning a holiday on Sylt? Or are you even there right now? The North Sea island offers many culinary options. Whether good and inexpensive or star cuisine with star chefs.

Everyone will find what they are looking for. Ask the locals where they like to eat!

During our 1-week stay, we ate our way around the island. From breakfast and various snacks in between to a cosy dinner.

Here in this article you will find our best restaurant tips for Sylt!

Have fun reading!

Bootshalle Gosch (List)

The history of Gosch began in the Bootshalle in List. If you're in the mood for fish, you're sure to find it here. We tested it at lunchtime. Unfortunately, our expectations were not really met. For food from the self-service counter, it was relatively expensive and also not the best in terms of quality. In our opinion, a fish roll on the hand is perfectly sufficient for a quick hunger.

We then paid a visit to the Gosch in the Alte Tonnenhalle a few days later. It's right opposite the first Gosch in the boat hall. We tried the fish rolls and canapés. Both were really delicious! Definitely the better choice when you're in the harbour in List.

Any Sylt holidaymaker will tell you that for them, a visit to Bootshalle is one of the top sights. The shops are widely spread all over the island, so of course we also ate here once. Whether you absolutely have to have eaten here? Decide for yourself.

Decades ago, the founder of Buhne 16 brought surfing to Germany. Buhne 16 was made famous by Gunter Sachs and Brigitte Bardot, who tanned here on the nudist beach.

Buhne 16 is sheltered behind a dune and is perfect for a few cool drinks in the sun. Our meal, however, was a bit of a letdown: turkey salad dry, arrabbiata scampi spaghetti also dry.

Only the potato with shrimp was tasty. All in all, it was still one of the lowlights on Sylt. Too bad, because the atmosphere here is really relaxed. You're better off with cool drinks here.

Everyone will recommend this famous café to you. "You have to go there, it's just cosy". That's exactly how we feel as we enter the maze-like winding garden. In search of a coveted spot in the shade, we are kindly assisted by a waiter.

We were here for breakfast. You still shouldn't miss the cakes.

In the most famous ice cream parlour on the island, you absolutely have to try the homemade quark-salted caramel ice cream! The ice cream parlour is no longer an insider tip and even when it rains, people queue up for a scoop of ice cream.

You can also buy the delicious "Hafenwasser" (harbour water) at the Sylt ice cream factory. A hazelnut spirit on a vodka basis, distilled with Sylt North Sea water. The perfect souvenir for all liquor lovers.

At Voigts Alter Backstube at the entrance to List, you can sit in the large garden and enjoy delicious salads and pancakes. We liked the blueberry pancake and the homemade iced tea best. So good, in fact, that we forgot to take a nice picture! Priced in the good Sylt mid-range.

The Sansibar in Rantum, known far beyond Sylt, lives from its name. The celebrity density is high, and the restaurant is usually booked up more than a year in advance. In summer, the car park is often closed at midday due to overcrowding.

If you still want to try the delicious curry sausage with fried potatoes or french fries, we strongly advise you to stop by in the afternoon. During the day, you can always find a spot outside, as we did on our way back from Hörnum.

The wine list is as thick as a telephone book used to be. The daily menu changes. In the evening you'll be served different dishes.

We thought it was okay, but you'll definitely be more comfortable at the next tip, just one beach entrance away:

Samoa Seahorse (Rantum)

One beach entrance over from the famous Sansibar is the Samoa Seepferdchen. If you don't want to book a table at the Sansibar a year in advance, you should try this place. The wooden hut with outdoor dining is located directly in the dunes and convinced us all along the line with its cuisine.

The taste is really 1A. The price level is relatively high, but the service is top notch. Treat yourself to dinner here: Especially the scallops with horseradish are to die for. We called spontaneously and reserved a table, which worked out great.

Twisters (Wenningstedt)

The supposed best burgers are at Twisters on the beach promenade in Wenningstedt. Here, too, we had a bit of bad luck. Three Rocky Point burgers with goat cheese, walnut, figs, honey dates and fig mustard had very dry meat.

The twisters (curly fries) and sweet potato fries were delicious. Hannah had a lamb chilli and was very happy with it. Maybe we just had a bad day. Because before we arrived, Twisters was recommended to us several times!

One of our absolute foodie highlights was Brot & Bier in Keitum. Here you can get your fill of sandwiches. If you think "sandwiches are boring...", we'll have to prove you wrong. Here bread makes its grand entrance!

Whether it's "Strammer Max" with matie, roast beef or salmon, everyone will find something here. As the name suggests, beer is the preferred accompaniment to bread here. The local beer WATT is available in all variations. A clear recommendation, especially for those who are not after oysters and caviar.

If you're already in Friesland, you have to drink tea, of course. There are over 80 varieties in the small tea room in Keitum. From classic black tea to fruity varieties and green tea, everyone will find their perfect tea here. Fresh cakes, waffles and savouries are also available.

We tried a jacket potato with prawns. It was the best on the island. At the next table there were sweets, but unfortunately we weren't hungry enough to try everything. But the pleasant "Mhhhh.... delicious!" we heard all the way to us. The service in the little tea room was also very attentive, an all-round great visit.

If you can't get a seat at the starred restaurant Sölring Hof in Rantum, you should stop by the small Genussshop. The shop of Sylt's two-star chef Johannes King offers his food creations at moderate prices. You can also buy his products to take home in the shop.

Highly praised, but not our favourite. At Shirobar you get really good sushi, Japanese beer, sake and daily specials. Maybe we weren't quite the target group you'd normally expect at Shirobar, but the service was simply not good.

The food, however, was excellent, albeit at relatively high prices. These, however, were quite justified. Since Japan, we are used to other sushi concepts. As the saying goes: you can do it, but you don't have to.

  • Opening hours: Daily from 17. 30 - 22.30 except Tuesday: closed.

When you're feeling peckish on the promenade in Westerland, stop off at the Crêperie am Meer! In this little place right on the beach you can get sweet and savoury crêpes to hand or to eat on the spot. We tried the Nutella with Sylt salt version.

It takes a bit of getting used to, but very tasty. And at 4.50 euros, it's a rather inexpensive meal by Sylt standards. Of course, beer and other cold drinks are also available for toasting.

We had a delicious breakfast in this old pastry shop in the middle of the pedestrian zone. Especially recommended: Scandinavian breakfast, Kaiserschmarrn and the self-assembled sandwiches.

Directly adjacent is the chocolate manufactory that the owners of Café Wien once founded. Try at least one of the chocolates! Mmmmhhh... (in summer better eat it right away!)

Buy one of the cheap burgers, go down the stairs to the beach and enjoy your meal in a beach chair. Unfortunately, we didn't have enough here (or rather, we weren't hungry when we passed by). Still, the prices are really affordable for Sylt.

  1. Self-catering instead of eating out

  2. Book your holiday before or after the high season

  3. Rent a holiday apartment/house or go camping

  4. Avoid Kampen's "whisky mile" Strönwai, the most northerly luxury mile in Germany

  5. Free oysters in List. Because these are washed up in the mudflats due to climate warming

  6. The further east you go, the cheaper Sylt becomes.
