Jaipur: A 40-year-old widow was allegedly murdered by her relatives after they maliciously blamed her for being a witch or dayan.
This incident took place at Kekdi, a block about 135 kilometres from the state capital. It is alleged that the woman was branded witch because relatives wanted to take over her assets. The widow died after the neighbour and relatives pushed a hot rod into her eyes as a part of the “faith healing” process. She was also forced to eat faeces, and was tortured and beaten during the process.
The panchayat, then, quickly cremated the body and penalised the culprits to take a “holy” dip in Pushkar lake. Kanya Devi Raigar, the deceased, had lost her husband, Chittar, about a month ago. She was currently livi

“On August 3, Kanya’s brother-in-law informed us that she had died and that they were going to cremate the body,” Mahadev said. “Before we could have reached Kadeda, they had cremated the body. Some villagers and Kalu told us that after accusing her of being a witch, Mahavir, Pinki, Sonia, Laadi Devi, Manohar, and Chandra Prakash tied her with chain, dragged and tortured her on August 2 night because of which she died the following morning at around 8 o’clock,” he added. The police have not registered FIR after four days of lodging the complaint. Maternal relatives of the deceased were stopped to take a legal action by the panchayat.
“I received the complaint on August 8,” said Hari Ram Kumawat, SHO, Kekdi police station. “FIR cannot be filed in this case since complainant is not close relative of the deceased. It is also not possible to figure out the cause of death because the body has been cremated,” he added.
