SC okays bullock-cart races, but with riders

Shiv Sena MP Adhalrao-Patil had approached the apex court

The Supreme Court (SC) on Friday stayed the decision to ban bullock-cart races in Maharashtra with a few conditions that no human life is lost during the race and prior permission of the district collector is taken.
Shirur Lok Sabha MP Shivajirao Adhalrao-Patil said it was a dream come true for him as he was fighting against this ban for a long time. The state government through a circular in August 2011 had banned bullock-cart races.
The high court had imposed a ban in December 2011 and the farmers in rural parts kept organising races even after the ban was declared. The police department had filed cases against the farmers which had resulted in tensions in many parts.
