Govt eyes plastic route for sturdy roads

Mumbai: In a significant move, the Union Ministry of Roads and Highways has proposed to make it mandatory to mix 8 per cent plastic waste and tyre pieces with bitumen in the road construction — both in urban and rural areas across India.
Union Road Transport and Highways minister Nitin Gadkari told DNA, “Eight per cent mixing of plastic waste and tyre pieces in bitumen will be mandatory for construction of roads in rural and urban areas by the municipal councils, municipal corporations, state and central governments. I have given clearance and the file has been moved to ministries of urban development and rural development. The order will be issued soon.”
