Ape ado forest dept says police have committed a crime, want mammal freed

Shahjahanpur (UP): A langur has pitted the police against forest officials in Shahjahanpur district of Uttar Pradesh.
It all started after the
langur was brought to a police station few days ago on the grounds that the mammal was a “necessity” to drive away native rhesus monkeys that disrupt their daily routine.
However, the chained langur has upset the forest department, which says the cops have committed a crime under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. According to the Act, langurs cannot be owned, sold or hired out and violators can be jailed up to 3 years.
Inspector Vinay Kumar said they train female police recruits at the site and the monkeys have become a big nuisance for them.
