A 29-year-old woman in affluent Chandigarh stood up to two drunk men chasing her car and got the police to act despite political pressure. Far away from the Le Corbusier-designed urban haven, in eastern Uttar Pradesh’s nondescript Bansdih village near Varanasi, a 17-year-old girl was butchered to death by her stalker amid outrage over the Chandigarh incident. Few took note of this incident.
The two cases of stalking have a common thread—in both cases the stalkers’ fathers had political clout and muscle power. But the stark difference in background of the two victims, contrasting social mindsets, and circumstances led to different fates for the two victims.
