Villa Sarabhai reflects Corbusier’s creative genius

Villa Sarabhai, created in 1954, marks yet another landmark by architect Le Corbusier on the architectural landscape of Ahmedabad. Gira Sarabhai, sister-in-law of Manorama Sarabhai had initiated Corbusier’s commissioning in the city of Ahmedabad. Manorama Sarabhai was also the sister of mayor of Ahmedabad city, Sheth Chinubhai. Apart from being the mayor, he was also the secretary of Mill Owner’s Association. Thus, at one go, Corbusier got five commissions within inter-related families in the city.
But the remarkable aspect is that although all five buildings were contemporaries in time they exhibited very varied final resolution. For example, two houses — Villa Shodhan and Villa Sarabhai — being in the same city and for affluent
