Cong pulled plug on Deve Gowda in 1997

New Delhi: The Congress’ decision to back JD(S) and prop up its leader HD Kumaraswamy as Karnataka’s next Chief Minister brought back 20-year-old memories.
In 1997, then Congress president Sitaram Kesri withdrew support to Kumaraswamy’s father Deve Gowda-led United Front government at the Centre.
In fact, the grand old party has a record of extending outside support to governments but withdrawing the same.
In 1979, Indira Gandhi-led Congress did the same to Chaudhary Charan Singh’s government. In 1991, the party pulled down PM Chandrashekhar’s Janata Dal government on flimsy charges. In 1998, it again abruptly ended the term of IK Gujral’s government at the Centre.
